PACE

Department of State.

Peace Awareness Campaign through Education (PACE) is a project initiated and implemented by Anak Halmahera (KAHERA) in the religious and tribal post-conflict area in North Maluku. This year PACE was carried out in Tobelo, North Halmahera for a two month period, completed by over 60 participants (our initial target is 50) from 10 different schools: SMA Neg. 1 Tobelo, SMA Kristen Tobelo, SMK Gotong Royong, SMA Neg. 6 Tobelo, SMK Neg. 1 Tobelo, SMK Alkhairat Tobelo, Madrasah Aliyah Tobelo, SMK Bina Karya, SMK Nusantara and SMK Global Pacific.

The program is focusing on spreading a peace campaign and reconciliation among youth by learning together in the classroom. When the recruitment process was started, we asked the schools to send students from various tribes and religions to meet our purpose of creating diversity. This year PACE has consisted of two main programs: media training, including radio broadcasting, introducing to press and how to create a blog. English courses focus on practical conversation, grammar and introduction to overseas exchange programs. Both of the programs are free of cost. Nevertheless, we also created teamwork activities, mixed them with different individuals that they have never met before and they must introduce this new friend to others. The outcome of this program is that students can become the “peace messenger” to deliver peace messages to their friends at schools, families at home and their respective communities. PACE project has been published by a well-known local newspaper, Radar Halmahera and international media, The Huffington Post as well as an official website of the largest exchange program consortium, CCC which managed Community College Initiative (CCI) program under the U.S. Department of State.
